| The highlight of the day was the discovery of a male Harlequin Duck on St Kilda, Western Isles; presumably the same individual as
earlier present on Unst, Shetland Isles on 5th-11th August. Rarities elsewhere included the
Turkestan Shrike still in East Yorkshire, Black Scoter in Aberdeenshire,
Iberian Chiffchaff in London, Citrine Wagtail in Gwent, White-rumped Sandpiper in Lothian,
Bonaparte's Gull in Kent, three Black-winged Stilts together in Cheshire, and
Bee-eaters in Aberdeenshire, Hampshire, and Norfolk (10). A noticeable arrival of birds on the Shetland Isles included Greenish Warbler, Citrine Wagtail, Shorelark, Wryneck, two Common Rosefinches, and three each of both Icterine Warbler and Barred Warbler. Seabirds logged today included 12 each of both Wilson's Petrel and Sabine's Gull, three Long-tailed Skuas, 38 Cory's Shearwaters, and 158 Great Shearwaters. Other scarcities included Purple Heron (Buckinghamshire), Red-necked Phalarope (East Yorkshire), Temminck's Stint (Northumberland), Dotterel (Kent), American Wigeon (County Londonderry), Surf Scoter (Angus), two American Golden Plovers, three each of both Red-backed Shrikes and Wrynecks, five of Pectoral Sandpiper and Spotted Crake, and a total of 22 Glossy Ibises. |
