The highlight of the day was a Belted Kingfisher in Lancashire on the River Ribble near
Brockholes; discovered in the late morning it could not be relocated by dusk. Rarities elsewhere comprised the White-crowned Sparrow still on the Shetland Isles, both White-tailed Lapwing and Red-flanked Bluetail in East Yorkshire, White-winged Scoter in Lothian, Pacific Golden Plover and Dusky Warbler in Lincolnshire, Lesser Scaup in Somerset, Ferruginous Duck in Staffordshire, King Eider in Moray, and Ross's Goose in Ayrshire. Scarcities included Melodious Warbler, Pallas's Warbler, Short-toed Lark, and Red-breasted Flycatcher (Norfolk), Barred Warbler (Cornwall), Rough-legged Buzzard (Kent), Hoopoe (Isles of Scilly), Rose-coloured Starling (Cornwall), Ring-billed Gull (County Galway), Pectoral Sandpiper (Devon), Yellow-browed Warbler (Suffolk), two each of Little Bunting, Richard's Pipit, and American Wigeon, three of Great Grey Shrike and Lapland Bunting, four of Surf Scoter and Green-winged Teal, five Ring-necked Ducks, eight Glossy Ibises, and 12 Shorelarks. |
