The highlight of the day was the discovery of an adult male Black Scoter off Black Rock Sands, Gwynedd: only the third record for Wales following
single males at Newgale, Pembrokeshire on 25th December 1991-9th February 1992, and a returning bird at Llanfairfechan, Conwy, present each winter between 10th March 1999 and 9th April 2007. Elsewhere, lingering rarities confirmed as still present were the two American Buff-bellied Pipits together in Berkshire, Desert Wheatear and King Eider together in Aberdeenshire, a Bonaparte's Gull in Glamorgan, Lesser Yellowlegs in Devon, Lesser Scaup in Somerset, and Black-bellied Dipper in Norfolk. Notable scarcities included the Pallas's Warbler in Berkshire, new Ring-billed Gulls in both Cornwall and the Shetland Isles, Surf Scoter in Conwy, Cattle Egret still in County Donegal, both Richard's Pipit and Temminck's Stint in Somerset, and single Kumlien's Gulls in Cheshire and East Yorkshire. |
