Illegal electronic quail callers seized in Italian night patrols

Volunteer game wardens and provincial police found six prohibited electromagnetic callers positioned to concentrate Common Quail across six municipalities in Macerata province.

Six illegal electronic devices intended to attract Common Quail have been seized during night patrols in Italy's Macerata province.

Eighteen volunteer game wardens from the provincial branch of Federcaccia took part in the operations, which were co-ordinated by Macerata Provincial Police. The Italian hunting federation published details of the seizures on 14 September.

The electromagnetic acoustic callers were located in the municipalities of Recanati, Appignano, San Ginesio, Monte San Martino, Fiuminata and Monte San Giusto. One device was reported from each municipality.

Recorded calls can draw migrating quail towards a chosen location and hold birds in the surrounding vegetation. That concentration makes them easier to shoot and can greatly increase the number exposed at a single site.

Italian law prohibits the use of electronic callers for hunting. Federcaccia described the devices as a form of poaching capable of facilitating indiscriminate killing, and said their removal protects both the species and hunters operating within the law.

Common Quail is a long-distance migrant whose European populations move across the Mediterranean and the Sahara. Night-time calling is one of the species' most familiar characteristics, but it also makes broadcast recordings an effective way of manipulating birds during migration.

The operation is notable because it was reported by a hunting federation and carried out by its volunteer wardens alongside public police. It demonstrates that enforcement against illegal methods can involve hunters as well as conservation organisations and state authorities.

No suspect, arrest or prosecution was identified in the published account. The callers may have been found unattended, so the evidence supports reporting the seizure of prohibited equipment but not attributing its placement to a particular person.

Removing six devices prevents their immediate reuse, but any lasting deterrent will depend on continued patrols and successful identification of offenders. The distribution across six municipalities suggests the problem was not confined to a single isolated location.
