| A busy day for new rarities. Top of the standings came from Out Skerries,
Shetland, with both Pechora Pipit and Lanceolated Warbler
discovered. Nearby, an Arctic Warbler and a Citrine Wagtail were
found on Fair Isle, whilst a Blyth's Reed Warbler was on Unst. Another
Blyth's Reed Warbler was further south on Sanday, Orkney. Off the west
coast, an American Buff-bellied Pipit was on the beach at
Smerclate, South Uist.
Further south, an adult male Red-footed Falcon flew over Fenwick,. Northumberland, with a White-rumped Sandpiper also in the same county. Another White-rumped Sandpiper joined the Western or Semipalmated Sandpiper at Hoylake, Wirral. Ortolan Buntings were found on Lundy, Devon, and on St Mary's and St Agnes, both Isles of Scilly. Lingering rarities were headlined by the Short-billed Dowitchers in Dorset and Isles of Scilly, Baillon's Crake in London, Western Bonelli's Warbler on Isles of Scilly, Lesser Yellowlegs in Cornwall, White-rumped Sandpiper in Somerset, Semipalmated Sandpipers in County Cork and Ceredigion, Long-billed Dowitcher in Gloucestershire and Bonaparte's Gull in County Antrim. |

| Thursday 20th September 2012 | ||
| A Western Bonelli's Warbler and an Ortolan Bunting were both
discovered on The Garrison, St Mary's, Isles of Scilly, whilst another of the
latter was at Skibbereen, County Cork. A Semipalmated Sandpiper was at
Borth, Ceredigion, with two at Garretstown, County Cork, and an American
Golden Plover was at Carrahane Strand, County Kerry.
The North American peep remained at Hoylake, Wirral, but opinion remains divided over its identification (Western or Semipalmated Sandpiper). Other lingering rarities included the Short-billed Dowitchers in Dorset and the Isles of Scilly, Baillon's Crake in London, Semipalmated Sandpiper in Lothian, White-rumped Sandpiper in Somerset, Long-billed Dowitcher in Gloucestershire, Lesser Yellowlegs in Cornwall, American Golden Plovers in Orkney (3) and Western Isles (2), Glossy Ibises in Cambridgeshire and County Wexford, Black Duck in County Mayo, Lesser Scaup in Somerset and Ferruginous Duck in Lincolnshire. |

| Wednesday 19th September 2012 | ||
| The highlight of the day was the discovery of a Western Sandpiper at Hoylake, Wirral, where it showed well over the high tide, but was identified at that time as a Semipalmated Sandpiper. Other Nearctic waders today comprised
Short-billed Dowitchers in both Dorset and the Isles of Scilly, Semipalmated Sandpiper
in Lothian, Baird's Sandpiper in Norfolk, Spotted Sandpiper on the Western Isles,
Long-billed Dowitcher in Gloucestershire, Lesser Yellowlegs in Cornwall,
White-rumped Sandpiper in Somerset, seven American Golden Plovers (four on the Orkney Isles), nine
Buff-breasted Sandpipers and 24 Pectoral Sandpipers. Other rarities included an American Buff-bellied Pipit on South Uist, Western Isles, the Baillon's Crake still in London, Blue-winged Teal in Merseyside, Ferruginous Duck in Lincolnshire, Glossy Ibis in Pembrokeshire, and a Saker briefly in Lothian. Scarcities included 23 Lapland Buntings, seven Long-tailed Skuas, three Spotted Crakes, and single Barred Warbler (Norfolk), Red-backed Shrike (Orkney Isles), and Ring-necked Duck (South Yorkshire). |

| Monday 17th September 2012 | ||
| New discoveries today included an Ortolan Bunting on Portland, Dorset
(trapped and ringed at the observatory), and a White-rumped Sandpiper and
American Golden Plover on the Western Isles (South Uist and Benbecula
respectively).
Lingering rarities included the Short-billed Dowitchers in Dorset and Isles of Scilly, Baillon's Crake in London, Semipalmated Sandpiper in Lothian, single White-rumped Sandpipers in Somerset and County Wexford, Spotted Sandpiper and American Golden Plover on the Western Isles (with others of the latter in Orkney (3) and County Wexford), Long-billed Dowitcher in Gloucestershire, Citrine Wagtail in the Isles of Scilly, Glossy Ibis in Cambridgeshire, Lesser Scaup in Somerset and Ferruginous Duck in Lincolnshire. A wader at Balgarva, South Uist, Western Isles earlier in the month, thought by some to be a Western Sandpiper, may have reappeared this morning, but wasn't conclusively identified. |

| Sunday 16th September 2012 | ||
| Today's new rarities included single Blue-winged Teals at Marshside
RSPB, Merseyside and Kirkintilloch, Clyde, Baird's Sandpiper at Esha
Ness, Shetland, White-rumped Sandpiper on Tean, Isles of Scilly and
single American Golden Plovers on Sanday, Orkney and South Uist, Western
Isles.
Lingering rarities included the Short-billed Dowitchers in Dorset and Isles of Scilly, Baillon's Crake in London, Black Duck in County Mayo, Semipalmated Sandpiper in Lothian, single Spotted Sandpipers in County Kerry and Western Isles, single White-rumped Sandpipers in Somerset and County Wexford, American Golden Plovers in County Wexford, County Clare, County Mayo, Orkney and Western Isles (2), Long-billed Dowitcher in Gloucestershire, at least two Citrine Wagtails on the Isles of Scilly, Bonaparte's Gull in County Antrim, single Glossy Ibises in Cambridgeshire and Pembrokeshire and Ferruginous Duck in Lincolnshire. |

| Saturday 15th September 2012 | ||
| A Little Bittern in Kent was perhaps the most surprising discovery
today, when it was flushed at Sevenoaks Wildfowl Reserve. American waders found
today included single Semipalmated Sandpipers at Tyninghame Bay, Lothian
and Lough Foyle, County Derry, a White-rumped Sandpiper at Steart,
Somerset and single American Golden Plovers at The Cull, County Wexford
and Achill Island, County Mayo. A Lesser Scaup was at Loch Leven, Perth
and Kinross and a Pacific Golden Plover was at Derrybeg, County Donegal.
Lingering rarities included the Short-billed Dowitchers in Scilly and Dorset, Baillon's Crake in London, Red-eyed Vireo in Shetland, two Citrine Wagtails on the Isles of Scilly, Baird's Sandpiper in County Wicklow, Spotted Sandpiper in County Kerry, White-rumped Sandpiper, American Golden Plover and Glossy Ibis in County Wexford, Lesser Yellowlegs in Cornwall, Long-billed Dowitcher in Gloucestershire, Lesser Scaup in Somerset and Ferruginous Duck in Lincolnshire. |

| Friday 14th September 2012 | ||
| A Lesser Grey Shrike on Fetlar, Shetland was another quality rarity
for the archipelago, with the Red-eyed Vireo remaining nearby on Unst. In
Ireland, a Blue-winged Teal was on Lough Beg, County Derry, a Baird's
Sandpiper was at Kilcoole, County Wicklow and the Bonaparte's Gull
returned to Larne, County Antrim. An American Golden Plover was a new
discovery on South Uist, Western Isles, whilst an Ortolan Bunting on St
Mary's, Isles of Scilly may have been a relocating bird from nearby Tresco.
Lingering rarities included both Short-billed Dowitchers in Scilly and Dorset, Baillon's Crake in London, Spanish Sparrow in Suffolk, Citrine Wagtail and Ortolan Bunting in Scilly, Long-billed Dowitcher in Gloucestershire, Spotted Sandpiper in County Kerry, White-rumped Sandpiper and American Golden Plover in County Wexford, American Golden Plover in Orkney, Lesser Scaup and Ferruginous Duck in Somerset and Glossy Ibises in Cambridgeshire, Pembrokeshire and County Wexford. |

| Wednesday 12th September 2012 | ||
| The highlight of the day was the discovery of the first Nearctic landbird of the autumn: a
Red-eyed Vireo on Unst, Shetland Isles. This is the first record for the Shetland Isles, and the earliest record of this species in Britain, following one on the Isles of Scilly on 13th September 2011. Nearctic waders remained in evidence with Short-billed Dowitchers still in both Dorset and the Isles of Scilly, Semipalmated Sandpiper in Dumfies and Galloway, Baird's Sandpiper in Cleveland, Spotted Sandpiper in County Kerry, Long-billed Dowitcher in Gloucestershire, Lesser Yellowlegs in Cornwall, American Golden Plover in County Clare, White-rumped Sandpipers in both Cambridgeshire and County Wexford, five Buff-breasted Sandpipers and 12 Pectoral Sandpipers. Other rarities comprised the Baillon's Crake still in London, Greenish Warbler in Pembrokeshire, Citrine Wagtail and two Ortolan Buntings on the Isles of Scilly, Ortolan Bunting in County Galway, and single Glossy Ibises in Cambridgeshire, Pembrokeshire and County Wexford. Scarcities included 20 Lapland Buntings, three each of both Common Rosefinch and Wryneck, two each of Spotted Crake and Ring-billed Gull, and single Melodious Warbler (Gwynedd), Marsh Warbler (Shetland Isles), Barred Warbler (Norfolk), Ring-necked Duck (South Yorkshire) and Cattle Egret (Leicestershire). Seawatch totals included 14 Long-tailed Skuas, seven Sabine's Gulls and 69 Leach's Petrels; including 38 passing Ramore Head, County Antrim. |
