| Persistent rain in many areas hampered birders' chances of finding a weekend
mega, but even so, the odd rarity was still discovered. A Lesser Grey Shrike
on Fair Isle was probably the star find, but a Broad-billed Sandpiper at
Back Saltholme Pool, Cleveland was obviously more popular. In Kent a
Bee-eater was mobile in the Dungeness area and in Suffolk a Great White
Egret was seen in flight at Minsmere RSPB, where at least three Purple
Herons still remain. Yesterdays pair of Lesser Scaup were relocated
at Cresswell Pond, then later in the day at Bothal Pond, Northumberland.
Other rarities up for grabs included the Iberian Chiffchaff in Norfolk, Laughing Gull in Devon, Squacco Heron on Isles of Scilly and Subalpine Warbler on Bardsey Island. In Lancashire the immature Glossy Ibis was once again relocated at yet another site on the Fylde coast, this time at Newton Marsh, and the county also hosted Common Crane, Temminck's Stint, Spoonbill and the popular family of Eagle Owls. The Isle of May, Fife, held two Bluethroats, whilst another was on Mainland Shetland and a Red-breasted Flycatcher was on Unst. |
