| The highlight of the day was a Bonaparte's Gull seen briefly at Tynemouth, Northumberland in the evening: it had been
found yesterday just to the south at Whitburn, County Durham. Elsewhere, lingering rarities included the
Semipalmated Sandpiper still in Lothian, the House Finch in Devon, Ferruginous Duck in Somerset and
Glossy Ibises in each of County Clare (2), County Dublin (2) and County Wexford. Scarcities were headlined by a total of 91 Lapland Buntings across seven counties (including 51 on Fair Isle, Shetland Isles), otherwise, there were seven Pectoral Sandpipers, three each of Common Rosefinch (together on the Shetland Isles) and Wryneck, two each of Kentish Plover, Spotted Crake (together in County Durham), Barred Warbler, Ring-billed Gull and Great White Egret, and single Short-toed Lark (Norfolk), Woodchat Shrike (Isles of Scilly), Red-backed Shrike (Cornwall), Hoopoe (West Sussex), Caspian Gull (Suffolk), Red-necked Phalarope and Cattle Egret (both Essex) Seawatching highlights comprised a Wilson's Petrel off County Donegal, Cory's Shearwater in Norfolk, Great Shearwater passing Pembrokeshire, 24 Long-tailed Skuas spread across eleven counties, eight Sabine's Gulls, twenty Leach's Petrels, nineteen Pomarine Skuas, five Grey Phalaropes and 83 Balearic Shearwaters. |

| Although the Red-necked Stint could not be located in Dorset, lingering rarities confirmed as still present elsewhere comprised the
Semipalmated Sandpiper in Lothian, the House Finch in Devon, American Herring Gull
in County Kerry, American Golden Plover in County Clare, Black Kite in Cornwall and
Glossy Ibises in both County Clare (2) and County Dublin (2). The Long-billed Dowitcher from Cheshire was relocated in Flintshire and a
Red-rumped Swallow was a brief encounter in Perth and Kinross. Scarcities were headlined by a count of 78 Lapland Buntings across ten counties (including 42 together on the Orkney Isles), six Barred Warblers, five Icterine Warblers, four Pectoral Sandpipers, three Surf Scoters (together in Aberdeenshire), two each of Kentish Plover, Red-backed Shrike and Wryneck, and single Ortolan Bunting (Suffolk), Melodious Warbler (Kent), Marsh Warbler (Lincolnshire), Common Rosefinch (Northumberland), Purple Heron (Dorset), Red-necked Phalarope (Essex), Hoopoe (West Sussex), Spotted Crake (County Durham), Cattle Egret (Devon) and, in Norfolk, Greenish Warbler, Short-toed Lark and Bluethroat. Seawatching highlights included a Wilson's Petrel and Cory's Shearwater passing County Donegal, Long-tailed Skuas off Conwy, Devon and County Mayo, Sabine's Gulls in Ayrshire and County Clare (2) and 52 Balearic Shearwaters noted across five counties. |

| Friday 27th August 2010 | ||

| A small wader photographed at Ferrybridge in Dorset at midday was later
identified as a Red-necked Stint but unfortunately could not be relocated
in the area during the afternoon. In Lothian, a small wader found at Tyninghame
Bay was also photographed and this was later identified as a Semi-palmated
Sandpiper.
In Norfolk an elusive Booted Warbler was found on Blakeney Point in the afternoon. A Black Kite was at Porthgwarra in Cornwall and a Glossy Ibis was found at Shannon Airport lagoon. The Broad-billed Sandpiper was seen again on Mersea Island in Essex this morning and the two Glossy Ibises remained in County Dublin. The American Golden Plover remained in County Clare as did the American Herring Gull in County Kerry. Five Barred Warblers, 3 Icterine Warblers a Wryneck and a Red-backed Shrike were along the east coast, while another Wryneck was in Shropshire and another Red-backed Shrike was in Cornwall. Seawatching was productive in the south and east with 4 Sabine's Gulls and a dozen Long-tailed Skuas being logged. |

| Thursday 26th August 2010 | ||

| A Long-billed Dowitcher at Inner Marsh Farm RSPB (Cheshire) was
probably the same bird that spent yesterday at Neumann's Flash, approximately 22
miles ENE of Inner Marsh Farm RSPB.
Elsewhere lingering rarities included House Finch in Devon, two Glossy Ibises in Co Dublin and American Golden Plover in Co Clare. Scarcities comprised two Barred Warblers and two Great White Egrets as well as Spotted Crake (Co Durham), Common Rosefinch (Shetland), Red-backed Shrike (Cornwall), Cattle Egret (Kent), Pectoral Sandpiper (Northumberland) and Dotterel (Cornwall). The seawatching highlight of the day was the second claim of a probable Short-tailed Shearwater of the month, this time off Pendeen (Cornwall). |

| Wednesday 25th August 2010 | ||

| In Cheshire an adult Long-billed Dowitcher was present at Neumann's
Flash until this evening when it flew off. In Norfolk a Caspian Tern flew
past Cley and in Northamptonshire a Red-rumped Swallow was sighted in
Rushden.
Lingering rarities included Black Duck and Snowy Owl (Co Mayo), Broad-billed Sandpiper (Essex), Semipalmated Sandpiper (Devon), Whiskered Tern (Cleveland), Ferruginous Duck (Somerset), two Glossy Ibises (Co Dublin), American Herring Gull (Co Kerry), Laughing Gull (Co Antrim) and American Golden Plover (Co Clare). Three Barred Warblers, two Buff-breasted Sandpipers, and single Wryneck, Icterine Warbler, Common Rosefinch, Cattle Egret, Great White Egret, Pectoral Sandpiper and Spotted Crake were all logged in Britain and Ireland today. |

| Tuesday 24th August 2010 | ||

| Late August seawatching at Bridges of Ross (Co Clare) once again produced the
goods - a Fea's Petrel was logged this morning (along with a report of a
Wilson's Petrel). Nearby an adult American Golden Plover was at
Poulnasherry Bay.
Lingering rarities included Ortolan Bunting (East Yorkshire), Semipalmated Sandpipers (Devon and Lincolnshire), Whiskered Tern (Cleveland), Broad-billed Sandpiper (Essex) and Snowy Owl (Co Mayo). Scarcities came in the form of four Great White Egrets, three Spotted Crakes, two each of Dotterel, Pectoral Sandpiper and Barred Warbler and single Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Red-backed Shrike and Melodious Warbler. |

| The adult Sharp-tailed Sandpiper in East Yorkshire began the day at
Patrington Haven before relocating to Kilnsea and Spurn, where it showed on the
Humber until early evening.
In Devon a juvenile Semipalmated Sandpiper at Dawlish Warren NNR may be the first of many given the weather forecast for remainder of this week. On Shetland a Paddyfield Warbler was discovered on Unst and in Co Dublin a flock of ten Glossy Ibises made landfall on the Rogerstown Estuary. Lingering rarities included Whiskered Tern in Cleveland, Semipalmated Sandpiper in Lincolnshire, Ferruginous Duck in Somerset and Glossy Ibis in Co Wexford. A Wilson's Petrel was logged from an Isles of Scilly pelagic and elsewhere scarcities came in the form of two Icterine Warblers, two Spotted Crakes, two Red-backed Shrikes, Barred Warbler, Marsh Warbler, Great White Egret, Cattle Egret, Purple Heron and Temminck's Stint. |

| An exciting day produced two Mega Alerts. The first concerned an adult
Sharp-tailed Sandpiper at Patrington Haven (East Yorkshire), apparently
found by the finder of East Yorkshire's last Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, at Sammy's
Point, Easington in September 2007. The second Mega Alert came from County Cork,
where an outrageously early Chimney Swift was seen near Castletownroche. With one exception - a bird at Spurn on 6th August 2000 - all previous Chimney
Swifts have occurred in October and November.
Elsewhere rarities included a juvenile Broad-billed Sandpiper at Mersea Island (Essex), Semipalmated Sandpiper in Lincolnshire, Whiskered Tern in Cleveland, Aquatic Warbler in Devon, two Glossy Ibises in Co Wexford, Snowy Owl in Co Mayo and Ferruginous Duck in Somerset. Scarcities came in the form of at least six Barred Warblers, three Spotted Crakes, three Dotterels, three Wrynecks, two Red-backed Shrikes, two Great White Egrets, Purple Heron, Cattle Egret, Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Pectoral Sandpiper, White-winged Black Tern and Temminck's Stint. |

| Saturday 21st August 2010 | ||

| Highlights included the lingering Semipalmated Sandpiper in
Lincolnshire and Whiskered Tern in Cleveland, whilst in Ireland, Co Mayo
produced Snowy Owl and Black Duck, Co Kerry hosted both American Herring Gull
and an Azorean Yellow-legged Gull and in Co Wexford the
Glossy Ibis remained at Tacumshin.
Barred Warblers were at Spurn and Flamborough Head (East Yorkshire), where a Red-backed Shrike was also discovered. Another Red-backed Shrike was located inland of Bridlington (East Yorkshire). Lingering scarcities included Pectoral Sandpipers in Perth & Kinross and Northumberland, Spotted Crakes in Co Durham and Kent, Purple Heron and Cattle Egret in Kent, Great White Egrets in Kent, Somerset and Co Down and Ring-necked Duck in Fife. Seabirds sightings were headlined by a report of a Little Shearwater off Stronsay (Orkney) and Wilson's Petrels off Isles of Scilly (3) and Galley Head, Co Cork (2). Eight Great Shearwaters, four Long-tailed Skuas and two Sabine's Gulls were also recorded from a selection of coastal watchpoints. |

| The Semipalmated Sandpiper lingered at Alkborough Flats (Lincolnshire)
and the Whiskered Tern was still at Saltholme RSPB (Cleveland).
Scarcities included a White-winged Black Tern (Norfolk), Spotted Crakes (Norfolk, Kent and Co Durham), Purple Heron (Kent), Cattle Egrets (Essex and Kent), Great White Egrets (Kent and Somerset), Wrynecks (East Yorkshire and Orkney), Barred Warbler (Orkney), Pectoral Sandpipers (Perth & Kinross and Northumberland), Ring-necked Duck (Perth & Kinross) Wilson's Petrels were logged off Galley Head (Co Cork) and an Isles of Scilly pelagic. |
