Record shot of an unringed bird taken in poor light at distance in the Apex Pit roost....superb looking bird and very distinctive even compared to the many dark mantled intermedius present, the vast majority of which are showing varying degrees of head streaking now. Small and dainty with very long prims, jet black uppers with no sign of covert moult, clean white head still. Of course it could be argued that a late moulting, small female intermedius could look like this but it really looked the part to my eyes, one of the the best adult candidates I've seen and by far the smartest looking bird on the lake! |
