The Ibis was feeding on worms in waterlogged grass in the middle of a housing estate next to a primary school, railway and bowling club. The bird was ridiculously tame and ignored passers-by and dog-walkers sauntering nearby on the pathway that led through the little park. It allowed a very close approach and when it did fly it only moved a few yards before resuming feeding and preening happily perched on one leg. (It is probably too tame for its own good and some of the local dogs may yet claim it!)
The plentiful supply of easily obtainable worms helps explain its presence in this rather unusual habitat
It has been about for the best part of a week though at the first sign of frost it will no doubt move on. |
