This adult male Magnificent Frigatebird was found in an emaciated state on farmland near Whitchurch, Shropshire on 8th November. The bird was taken into care but, despite the best efforts of Chester Zoo veterinary staff, died on 9th November.
It represents only the second confirmed record of Magnificent Frigatebird in the British Isles, the first meeting a similar fate, being taken into care exhausted at Scarlett Point, Castletown, Isle of Man on 22nd December 1998 later dieing in care in October 1999. An earlier record of Magnificent Frigatebird, found exhausted at Loch a' Phuill, Tiree, Argyll on 9th July 1953, subsequently proved to be a juvenile Ascension Frigatebird. Unidentified frigatebirds have previously been recorded in the British Isles in August 1960 (Aberdeenshire), August 1973 (Co.Cork), June 1988 (Co.Dublin), June 1989 (Co.Dublin) and June 1995 (Cornwall, Pembrokeshire and Co.Dublin). |
